People and Planet First was developed by and for the new economy movement, with the aim of providing a simple and accessible way to verify an organisation’s core purpose and business model.

Every organisation that receives the People and Planet First verification demonstrates that it is addressing a social and/or environmental problem and reinvesting the majority of its profits to benefit many, not just a few.

It can complement certifications focused on policies and practices, while also serving as a clear differentiator for your organisation.

IS YOUR VENTURE ELIGIBLE?

THE VERIFICATION IS BASED ON 5 STANDARDS:

  1. PURPOSE: Exists to address a social and/or environmental problem.
  2. OPERATIONS: Prioritises purpose, people and the planet over profit in operational decision-making.
  3. REVENUE: Has a financially self-sustaining revenue model.
  4. USE OF SURPLUS: Reinvests the majority of its surplus towards its purpose.
  5. STRUCTURE: Chooses legal structures and financing that protect and safeguard its purpose over the long term. This may include a corporation, limited liability company, cooperative, civil association or other legal structures.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Verification is carried out through verification partners in most regions.

STEP 1: EXPRESS YOUR INTEREST

Create a free public profile for your organisation on Good Market with this link.

STEP 2: PAY THE VERIFICATION FEE

Once your organisation has been approved, you’ll can pay the US$85 verification fee online with this link.

STEP 3: COMPLETE THE APPLICATION FORM

Go to your account page, open the short verification form and select the relevant points for each of the five standards. We’ll support you in preparing the required supporting documentation.

ANNUAL RENEWAL

Your verification is reviewed and renewed annually to ensure that the standards continue to be met.

You’ll be asked to resubmit your evidence and pay a US$70 renewal fee.
